Glass falling twice in one week from a Calgary office building has forced city officials to close nearby sidewalks and lanes, while the company that owns the building investigates the issue and takes precautionary measures.

The structural integrity of the Brookfield Place office building’s glass facade is being questioned, which was part of the reason behind the closures, noted CBC News.

Falling Facade

The first falling glass incident occurred on Oct. 15, when high winds caused a piece of window-washing equipment to hit the northeast facade of the building. This resulted in a glass panel on the 51st floor breaking.

On Oct. 29, another glass panel broke on the 23rd floor of the same facade.

As of Oct. 31, the city implemented a closure of nearby lanes and sidewalks.

Current closures include:

  • Two right lanes on First Street, which will result in a two-way traffic plan;
  • Sidewalks on the east and north sides of the building; and
  • Sidewalks and a left lane on Sixth Avenue.

"The City of Calgary's Safety Response Unit (SRU) has instructed Brookfield Place to implement a Public Protection Site Safety Plan to facilitate ongoing inspections, maintenance and repairs of its glazed windows," city officials said in a release to CBC News.

Closures, which were put in place on 6 p.m. on Tuesday (Oct. 31), will remain active until no longer deemed necessary.

In light of the falling glass, Brookfield Property Group, the owners of the Brookfield Place building, will implement additional safety precautions, which includes the installation of an additional protective coating on nearby windows.

Brookfield Place officials have announced that an investigation is underway.
