An art installation off the coast of South Korea aims to illustrate how materials can interact with nature and how rain can literally wash everything away.

The Dissolving Arch, created by design company stpmj (co-based in New York and Seoul) for the Amorepacific Museum of Art, sits in a remote location on Jeju Island in the Korea Straits, which is known for its tropical climate.

Design & Materials

The arch was designed to dissolve as the island’s rainy season washes over the area.

The structure began as a solid brick vault and eventually became a mortar skeleton as the bricks dissolved away from the structure.

The rose-colored bricks were made of rock salt, each measuring 200 by 100 by 50 millimeters (7.8 by 3.9 by 1.9 inches). Each rock salt brick was scored to adhere to the cement mortar of the arch. The cement was also reinforced with steel wires.

The structure was initially erected in June before the three-month rainy season, and over the course of the three months as the bricks dissolved more and more light shone through the skeleton, transforming the piece into a completely different installation.
