Famed chef Frank Prisinzano wanted his Floridian vacation home to allow him to enjoy nature, but with a bit of privacy, so architect Christian Wassmann came up with a solution.

Completed last year, the concrete spiral structure sits in the backyard of a renovated 1930s bungalow, curved 11.25 degrees to map the sun’s path during summer solstice.

Completed last year, the concrete spiral structure sits in the backyard of a renovated 1930s bungalow, curved 11.25 degrees to map the sun’s path during summer solstice.

The structure’s spiral staircase houses the axis for the whole project, which has a second level that juts out in a glass rectangle, and is glazed floor to ceiling.

“This curved wall is simultaneously structural, functional, and sculptural,” says Wassman. “Conceptually, the curve, which is based on the sun path diagram of the site, serves as the spine of the project.”

Though the walls of that level are all glass, shading and shielding from view is provided by vines that crawl along cables, giving Prisinzano the nature element he wanted.

“Solitude can be found under the open sky in this space, which is free of the incursions of everyday life,” the architect’s website notes. “Time spent in this contemplative space slowly reveals the house’s interactions with the sun.”

Materials such as marble and wood round out the finishes in the house.

Wassman worked with structural engineer Hector De Los Reyes Engineering Inc. and general contractor Cobo Construction Corp. on the project.
