Former heavyweight boxer David Bey was killed in a construction accident last week in Camden, New Jersey. According to reports, he was struck by materials.

Emergency crews were called to the Camden Towers construction site at around 2:30 p.m. on Thursday (Sept. 14) where they found Bey, 60, who had been fatally hit by a steel sheet pile.

The Camden County Prosecutor’s Office declined to provide further details, according to reports, and referred questions to the Occupational Health and Safety Administration.

OSHA's online database indicates the agency opened an investigation Sept. 15.

Bey was working as a pile driver with Local Carpenter’s 179 for a subcontractor on the project, A.P. Construction Inc.

Tony Bianchini, a spokesperson for the Northeast Regional Council of Carpenters, said in a statement that Bey “was a gentleman at all times—not a mean bone in his body. It’s a tragic accident.”

A spokesperson at A.P Construction declined to comment on Monday (Sept. 25) afternoon.

Bey, who was also known as “Hand Grenade,” was inducted into the Pennsylvania Boxing Hall of Fame earlier this year.

Working a real job and performing at the higher levels of a professional sport is a truly admirable thing. I wish more athletes did that.
