After a construction schedule that put crews right up against the stadium’s opening on Aug. 26, Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium hosted its first events with its roof open last weekend.

The one-of-a-kind roof, designed by international architecture and engineering firm HOK in collaboration with tvsdesign, Goode Van Slyke Architecture and Stanley Beaman & Sears, is made of eight 500-ton steel panels that retract in unison.

Design Delays

In late July, officials announced that though the stadium would be completed in time for a late-August premiere, the roof would not be open.

“As we come into new information and new obstacles, we figure out what impact it’s going to have on schedule,” Steve Cannon, CEO of Falcons parent company AMB Group, told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “It became clear, based on the construction moves of the roof we have had, based on some of the delays we have had, that we didn’t have time to automate the roof.”

The roof’s construction had already been responsible for multiple opening-day delays. (It was originally slated for March 1, then June 1, then June 30.)

While the roof is still not 100 percent complete, a stadium press release said that it had progressed enough to open for games with the weather permitting. “Work to fully automate the roof will continue throughout the fall,” the statement added.
