Solar Panel Made for Flexible Installation

Solar panels have gone flexible with Sunflare, which uses a light, thin solar cell model that is only a few micrometers thick.

Known as Capture4, the flexible solar panel is produced with a cell-by-cell manufacturing process that begins with a stainless-steel base, which is then layered with copper, iridium, gallium and selenide semiconductor materials, totaling only a few micrometers in thickness.

Solar panels have gone flexible with Sunflare, which uses a light, thin solar cell model that is only a few micrometers thick.

According to Sunflare, the SUN2 solar cell has better low light absorption than silicon, and has more active hours of operation during the day, which results in 10 percent more power generation. The cells also require 50 percent less energy to produce than crystalline silicon panels, and the Capture4 flexible panels do not require aluminum framing, glass or mounting.

Each segment can be installed with glue, welding or taping, and it has a total lifespan of 25 years, like its more traditional counterpart, with 90 percent efficiency output up until 25 years, which then drops to 80 percent after that benchmark.

Sunflare also offers a number of solutions for a range of roofs, including commercial, with the flexible paneling making for large-scale photovoltaics on industrial roofs. The company offers more customized options for residential neighborhoods.

They go to great lengths to hide their actual conversion efficiency, instead touting the low light improvements. From what I can dig up, it looks like they might currently be at 12% efficient. You can buy silicon based panels with >20% efficiency from multiple suppliers. The real advantages seem to be the low weight and flexibility. Ignore the "no frame" comments - you can get conventional panels which are frameless as well.
