A new color from Pantone (Caristadt, New Jersey) will honor the iconic Prince, as a result of working with his family’s estate.

The purple hue is identified by Prince’s “Love Symbol #2” (which was used as his name for several years). The color was inspired by his custom-made purple Yamaha piano, according to the company.

In 1984, the film Purple Rain and its award-winning soundtrack cemented the relationship Prince had with the color purple. The artist’s Love Symbol #2 will act as the branding mark for Pantone’s take on the iconic color.

“The color purple was synonymous with who Prince was and will always be. This is an incredible way for his legacy to live on forever,” Troy Carter, entertainment advisor to Prince’s estate, said in a statement.

The purple hue, which is identified by Prince’s “Love Symbol #2,” was inspired by his custom-made purple Yamaha piano, according to the company.

Prince was the recipient of an Oscar, as well as seven Grammy Awards and a Golden Globe for Purple Rain. The artist was also inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004, the first year he was eligible.

“We are honored to have worked on the development of Love Symbol #2, a distinctive new purple shade created in memory of Prince, 'the purple one,’” Laurie Pressman, vice president of the Pantone Color Institute, said in a statement.

“A musical icon known for his artistic brilliance, Love Symbol #2 is emblematic of Prince’s distinctive style. Long associated with the purple family, Love Symbol #2 enables Prince’s unique purple shade to be consistently replicated and maintain the same iconic status as the man himself."

The estate of the performer (who died in April 2016) is in talks with various entities about collaboration to incorporate the muted purple color into other products.
