SSPC Issues Moisture Determination Standard

Moisture determination methods for concrete and masonry walls is the topic of a new standard issued by SSPC: The Society for Protective Coatings, which also recently revised another standard, on lab-testing polyurethanes.

Guide to Moisture Determination

The new publication, SSPC Guide 23, Field Methods for the Determination of Moisture in Concrete and Masonry Walls and Ceilings, EIFS and Stucco, is a guide describing five common field methods of determining moisture content in certain exterior walls. The methods can be used on painted and unpainted concrete and masonry walls (including concrete masonry units, brick, stone, poured-in-place, pre-cast and tilt-up), Exterior Insulation and Finish Systems and stucco, and concrete and masonry ceilings.

Guide 23 describes five common field methods of determining moisture content in substrates including painted and unpainted concrete and masonry walls (including concrete masonry units, brick, stone, poured-in-place, pre-cast and tilt-up).

The new guide includes generic descriptions of equipment used in measuring moisture content, conditions necessary to perform testing, test procedures and other considerations affecting test results. It was developed by SSPC C.8.1 Commercial Cleaning and Painting, a committee chaired by Kevin Brown, of KTA-Tator Inc.

Polyurethane Lab Testing Standard

The revised standard is SSPC Paint 41, Moisture-Cured Polyurethane Primer or Intermediate Coat, Micaceous Iron Oxide Reinforced, Performance-Based. This standard provides lab testing benchmarks and acceptance criteria for generic coating type in its title. It was revised by SSPC C.1.3.D Polyurethane Coatings Committee, chaired by Michael J. Masciale.

The revision involves an expansion of the scope of the standard, which now allows for the moisture-cured polyurethane primer to be used either as a direct-to-steel coating or as an intermediate coat over a compatible primer.

Paint 41 has also been revised in relation to standard testing conditions, requirements of liquid coating, laboratory testing of applied coatings and scribe evaluation.

The new standard and the newly revised standard are both available via the SSPC Marketplace or via the SSPC App.
