New York City will be the home of a new center for artistic expression and invention.

The building, which is known as The Shed and was designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro in collaboration with the Rockwell Group, will be a 200,000-square-foot center situated along the High Line on 30th Street. The Shed will aim to provide a unique level of flexibility that will allow for the center to accommodate a wide range of artistic performances, including but not limited to multidisciplinary works and visual art.

Structural Design

Two main elements make the $425 million venue unique: an eight-level fixed-base building that will be used for cultural programming as well as provide support spaces, and a telescoping outer shell that, when deployed, can double the building’s footprint.

The base of the building will be home to a theater, two levels of gallery space, an artists’ lab, rehearsal space and a sky-lit event space. It will have a conventional steel frame with 100-foot-long clear spans enclosed in a glass cable wall.

The shell, on the other hand, will function as a vast hall to accommodate large performances, as well as installations and other events. When in action, the shell also creates a 17,200-square-foot space that is light, sound and temperature controlled. The movable shell will be comprised of an exposed-steel diagonal-grid frame with transluscent plastic

When the shell is projected, the space has a 21,000-square-foot plaza with a 120-foot-tall column-free hall.

According to The Shed’s website, the building will be able to expand and contract, essentially providing its own performance in addition to the ones it will house. What makes this possible is the rolling of the telescoping shell on rails, inspired by the industrial history of High Line and the West Side Railyard.

The Shed is slated to open in spring of 2019.
