Presenter David de Sola says he’s looking forward to shedding “light on this typically hidden-away performance layer."

The conference program will be divided into two sessions, featuring panel discussions and presentations. The last class of the day, “Quality Assurance and Installation Requirements for Liquid-Applied Air Barriers,” will conducted by David de Sola, a LEED-Accredited Professional specializing in Building Design and Construction and founding principal of 3ive LLC.

About the Class

De Sola aims to answer the questions: What are the key environmental and application challenges to consider when designing and constructing a robust air barrier for a building envelope? What are features of a successful observation and testing protocol that can help verify air and vapor performance objectives have been met?

“Air barriers are playing a growing role in new buildings in terms of controlling energy use and helping improve indoor air quality and environmental separation,” de Sola notes. “I’m looking forward to a lively dialogue with manufacturers and attendees to highlight the state of the industry with respect to materials as well as design and field considerations and shed some light on this typically hidden-away performance layer.”

Session attendees can expect to:

  • Learn ways to integrate design objectives with exterior performance objectives and to discuss life service goals for buildings with appropriate air and vapor barrier materials and detailing;
  • Review basic building science principles affecting the durability of materials and assemblies;
  • Understand specific site variables including environmental, constructibility and stakeholder relationships influencing AVB installation and outcomes; and
  • Learn about ways observation and testing activities can be used to improve both process and product.
