The world’s favorite color was announced, and its cool hue is connected to nature.

The color—which has been named Marrs Green for submitee Annie Marrs, who originally picked the color—is a teal with dark undertones, reminiscent of the Scottish landscape. The judgement was made based on an online poll hosted by Hull City of Culture 2017.

Annie Marrs, a fine arts graduate student and resident of Dundee, Scotland, drew inspiration for the color from surrounding nature.

"The color was inspired by the landscape that surrounds me at home in Scotland and that deep green hue with a tinge of blue has always been a favorite of mine," Marrs said in a statement.

Poll and Feedback

The online poll to determine the winner of World’s Favorite Color was hosted over six months, with over 30,000 participants. The news of the poll winner was announced in Hull—the U.K.’s second annual designated culture city, located in England—with the release of paper helicopters over Humber Street. To add to this, there is also a temporary pop-up shop that will be selling iconic merchandise in Marrs Green, and Marrs herself will be rewarded with the color being included in a temporary addition to G.F. Smith’s Colorplan paper line.

Caroline Till, editor of Viewpoint Colour Magazine, thinks that people’s positive response to the color is based in a desire to reconnect with nature.

"As the contemporary condition of 'nature deficit' rises in the context of increasingly urban and digital lifestyles, we seek to reconnect with the natural world, hence the current global popularity of the color green," Till said.

"In these uncertain times, where political and social upheaval has become the norm, we crave the calming tranquility of green and its association with the reassuring certainty of nature's cycles."

The world’s favorite color will also be included in the Paper City exhibition, which celebrates Hull.

Paper City Exhibition

Designers for this installation included Max Lamb and Bethan Laura Wood, who made structures from paper. Lamb created a number of large objects using the sizes and weights of G.F. Smith’s paper products as inspiration. Wood’s contribution is in an old smoke house, and is made out of strands of paper seaweed. A number of companies participated in the exhibition, including G.F. Smith.

Compensating for "nature deficit" by painting something green is the most English thing I've heard in a long time. I wonder if they consider those cell tower trees as effective camouflage?
