U.K.-based Flexcrete Technologies Ltd. has become the most recent addition to AkzoNobel’s portfolio, according to an announcement from the Dutch coatings giant, which is also in an acquisition agreement with French manufacturer Disa Technology (DisaTech).

According to AkzoNobel, both deals will strengthen the company’s position of leadership in providing coatings for industrial, aerospace and automotive industries.

Portfolio Building

AkzoNobel says the acquisition of Flexcrete Technologies, known primarily for its products that assist with the repair and protection of concrete substrates, will enable it to expand its offerings in several industrial markets, including chemical processing and commercial infrastructure.

DisaTech provides adhesive films for aerospace, transportation and industrial equipment purposes. The company also specializes in self-adhesive vinyl, as well as polyester and polycarbonate films used on aircraft, vehicles and agricultural machinery. Overall, the addition of DisaTech to AkzoNobel’s current portfolio will complement what the company already has in coatings and films for aerospace and transport sectors, according to AkzoNobel.

AkzoNobel

According to AkzoNobel, both of its recent deals will strengthen the company’s position of leadership in providing coatings for industrial, aerospace and automotive industries.

“Both acquisitions support our strategy of investing in growth and innovation and are strongly aligned with our growth strategy,” AkzoNobel CEO Ton Büchner said. “They will expand our existing product and service offering, enabling us to deliver significant benefits to our customers. These deals also offer us great opportunities to pursue further coatings innovations in a number of our core markets.”

“We are excited about the huge benefits that the acquisition will bring," said Flexcrete co-founder Graham James. "Although it will be very much business as usual and contacts will remain the same for our customers, the acquisition will enable us to build on our capabilities as a niche technology provider with the development of new, innovative and sustainable solutions for our target markets.

The DisaTech agreement is still subject to regulatory approvals. Financial terms of the two deals were not disclosed.

AkzoNobel employs more than 46,000 people across 80 countries, and according to the company, all Flexcrete staff have been retained.

AkzoNobel's Plan for Growth

The announcement for AkzoNobel’s latest merger also comes on the heels of the announcement that PPG Industries (Pittsburgh) has dropped its bid to acquire the Dutch paint company.

In the midst of PPG's attempted acquisition this spring, AkzoNobel rolled out a plan to accelerate growth by splitting its Specialty Chemicals business unit off into a separate entity.
