A university in England recently unveiled renovations for an on-campus chapel that brings Gothic-revival architecture into the 21st century.

Design Engine Architects

The Winton Chapel—located in the University of Winchester, England—underwent both renovations and an extension to celebrate its 175th anniversary.

The Winton Chapel—located in the University of Winchester, England—underwent both renovations and an extension to celebrate its 175th anniversary. The project was completed by Design Engine Architects, a local architecture studio.

An eye-catching part of this project is the extension, which serves as both a small chapel and a social space. Set to the north side of the chapel, the new addition is wrapped in perforated aluminum panels, which were anodized with a highly reflective gold finish. Perforations allow light to filter inside, and also allow the structure to glow by night. Design Engine also sought to keep some elements in common with the main chapel, constructing the roof so it shared a pitch, as well as asymmetric structure made from wooden beams.

According to the architects, the join between the original chapel and the addition was expressed with a recessed seam. The side chapel is tapered, giving additional width to the chapel space.

"The resulting design is an empathetic response to the Gothic-revival building, where its connection, form and materiality seem both intuitive and exciting," the architects said in an interview.

Otherwise, restoration of the chapel proper involved reviving the original wall of the chapel, with stone and oak floors and contemporary lighting.

Building Materials

As part of the project, Design Engine selected construction materials that tied in with the Christian faith.

For example, Purbeck limestone, traditionally found in places of worship, was used for the new altar, which is comprised of seven horizontal sections. The limestone was also chosen for the plinth the chapel basin rests on. The font on top is made of stainless steel.

New pieces of bespoke furniture are featured throughout the chapel and its new addition, including oak pews, a lectern, storage units as well as some other items. Architects worked in collaboration with Luke Hughes, one of the United Kingdom's leading furniture designers, on the furniture.

The Winton Chapel

The chapel was originally built in 1880, with an extension added in 1927. This renovation was originally commissioned by the university in 2015. With the last work completed by Design Engine, the space has become truly inclusive for everyone—the chapel is open people of all faiths, including those who might not have one. The Winton Chapel also serves as a memorial for two World Wars. According to Design Engine’s website, the contract was for £800,000 (a little over $1,000,000).

"The finished building is, quite literally, a jewel within the campus; a place for prayer and quiet contemplation, but also a place where one can be both moved and inspired," said Richard Webster, project manager at the University of Winchester.
