With just days left to submit an entry for Durability + Design’s inaugural Elevation Awards, we will be counting down to the deadline (May 26) by featuring a select nomination each day, giving you a glimpse of the competition. Below is a selected nominee in the “Renovation/Retrofit” category.

Project: Greenhouse Flooring

Wells Restoration LLC, Sika and Covestro teamed up to work on restoring the floors of Lef Farms, a hydroponic greenhouse, in Loudon, New Hampshire.

The floor was in the packaging area of the plant, meaning that not only did any materials used need to meet standards such as FDA Food Code 2009 and those in the Food Safety Modernization Act, but they also had to be easy-to-clean, anti-slip, durable and chemical resistant.

The floor was in the packaging area of the plant, meaning that not only did any materials used need to meet standards such as FDA Food Code 2009 and those in the Food Safety Modernization Act, but they also had to be easy to clean, anti-slip, durable and chemical resistant.

The system used also had to be tolerant of cool temperatures—the room was basically a cooler with a temperature of 35 degrees Fahrenheit—so that there wouldn’t be any issues between layers.

The crew of six to eight workers first steel-shot blasted the concrete surface. Then, saw-cuts and hairline cracks were patched using a flexible epoxy. Each drain body was addressed with a Sika epoxy mortar system.

The team mixed, applied and broadcasted the Sikafloor 22NA PurCem next at approximately ¼” thick. The floor was sealed with Sikafloor 510 Polyaspartic Urethane.
