Frye Roofing Inc. used a slew of products from Mule-Hide Products Co. Inc. to coat three hangars at the Mercer County Airport in Bluefield, West Virginia.

The metal roofs totaled 36,500 square feet, were between 30 and 35 years old and, though they were structurally sound, had been leaking for about eight years.

First, the crew performed adhesion tests, and then they cleaned all surfaces with Si Cleaner, bristle brushes and water. Metal panel side seams, end laps and fasteners were sealed with 100% Silicone Sealant. Where repair tape, mastics or caulks could not be removed, Tietex Poly Fabric was used with 100% Silicone Roof Coating. These materials were also used to seal the flashings and penetrations, except where that was not possible because of shape or placement, at which point 100% Silicone Sealant was used.

This was followed up with one coat of Si Two-Part Epoxy Primer that was applied to any spots that had signs of rust. Last, two coats of the 100% Silicone Roof Coatings (first in gray, then in white) were applied.

These materials were selected because of their application ability in colder temperatures, as well as the system’s quick cure time.

The metal roofs totaled 36,500 square feet, were between 30 and 35 years old and, though they were structurally sound, had been leaking for about eight years.

The team, which consisted of operations manager Henry Malkin, foreman Steve Sandlin and between four and six professionals, had only 45 working days to get the job done during the winter season. This time-stipulation included lead time for materials but did not include any days missed due to inclement weather.

The team was able to finish the project in 26 working days with a planned weather hiatus.

The crew also faced the challenge of drying the roof every morning in response to the dew that would accumulate overnight. They also had to apply the coating system with rollers, because any overspray would have had negative effects on the aircraft below the work area. Tanks also had to be brought onto the site so that crews had sufficient running water.
