Durability + Design is set to launch its inaugural Materials Selection Conference, a one-day seminar on Tuesday, Sept. 26, at the Hyatt Regency Pittsburgh International Airport in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

The conference program will be divided into two sessions, featuring panel discussions and presentations. Attendees will qualify to earn AIA continuing education credits.

“This conference will help owners, architects and contractors better understand the impact of permeance on exterior wall coatings; gain knowledge on how to determine the performance and cost effectiveness of liquid-applied air barriers; and gain critical firsthand insights of the strengths and weaknesses of specific coating brands," said Brion Palmer, CEO of Technology Publishing Co., which publishes D+D.

Wall Coating Performance

The first session of the day will educate attendees about WUFI® software and its use to determine the effect of a coating’s permeance on its performance, as well as the number of times a building can be repainted.

Andre Desjarlais of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) and Kevin Brown, KTA-Tator Inc. will discuss those topics.

Andre Desjarlais, of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, will present the first session of the day about WUFI software.

“The opening presentation on WUFI will cover basic building envelope moisture design principles and how WUFI Pro uses heat and mass transfer fundamentals along with the necessary input data to predict hygrothermal performance and make mold growth predictions,” said Desjarlais. “Validation of the hygrothermal simulation tool will also be covered.”

The session will also include a panel discussion, moderated by Ken Trimber, titled, "Performance on Exterior Walls of Specific Coating and Water Repellent Brands."

Trimber noted that the format of this panel is a little different than what conference-goers usually see.

KTA-Tator

There will also be a panel discussion moderated by Ken Trimber, KTA-Tator Inc.

“Most technical presentations force the presenters to discuss their products generically, even though their brands have unique features that cause them to be a better choice for given situations,” said Trimber.

This panel will break that mold, and will allow the manufacturers to discuss—in front of their competitors and peers—why their products are the preferred solution for the treatment of walls in eight different scenarios that will be presented.

He said that this format should make for some “lively and informative discussions” and allow the audience to walk away with specific solutions to problems that they may face.

Air Leakage and Air Barriers

The afternoon session will include a presentation focused on an online energy calculator developed by ORNL that allows designers and contractors to better estimate the energy and financial savings that can be achieved by reducing air leakage through building assemblies.

This session will also include a presentation on quality assurances and installation requirements for liquid-applied air barriers, led by David de Sola, 3iVE.

De Sola will also moderate an afternoon panel discussion on fluid applied air barrier product and installation considerations, featuring industry experts.
