On Sunday (March 5), crowds gathered in downtown Atlanta to witness the implosion of an iconic marble building that once housed state archives.

The demolition, captured on video, took less than one minute. Reports say a new $105 million state courts facility will be built in its footprint.

When the 14-story building—known locally as the “White Ice Cube” building—was constructed in 1965, it was billed as one of the most modern structures in the nation for housing archives, according to the Atlanta Journal Constitution.

In the late ‘90s, engineers determined that the building was sinking due to ground water and nearby construction and estimated that it would cost $40 million to repair and refurbish it, that report noted. A few years later, a new archives building was constructed in Morrow, Georgia.

The former archives building had reportedly stood vacant for five years before Sunday.
