Dow Coating Materials and SolarWindow Technologies were among 34 companies recently honored for their leadership in innovative technologies.

The Business Intelligence Group, an organization that rewards businesses based on vision, creativity and persistence, recently announced the winners of its annual BIG Innovation Awards. SolarWindow Technologies also claimed a Chairman’s Choice title.

Dow Coating Materials

Dow’s Paraloid Edge Technology is what brought the company to the BIG table. This technology intends to solve a common coatings problem: finding a product that doesn’t sacrifice its ease of use for enhanced performance.

"This annual business awards program recognizes organizations that have brought new ideas to life and sought to change the way we experience the world,” according to BIG’s news release,

Industrial Coating Progress Recognized

Dow’s Paraloid Edge Technology is what brought the company to the BIG table. This binder technology intends to solve a common coatings problem: finding a product that doesn’t sacrifice its ease of use for enhanced performance. Dow says that, unlike a traditional 2K polyurethane system, Paraloid expands the window of workability and remains fluid longer, without increasing dry time.

The product is also isocyanate- and formaldehyde-free, according to the company.

“Paraloid Edge stretches significant value across multiple industrial coatings applications,” said Dave Pierce, new business development, Dow Coating Materials, in a company press release after the win. “Specifically in automotive refinish and wood applications where excellent scratch resistance, hardness, weatherability, and chemical resistance are critical.”

SolarWindow's Work Grabs Chairman's Choice

SolarWindow is developing transparent electricity-generating technology for glass and veneers with the goal of turning buildings clean.

SolarWindow says its development could reduce electricity costs by as much as 50 percent per year.

The difference between this coating and conventional solar photovoltaic systems, is that this coating can be applied to all sides of a highrise, which would generate electricity using both natural and artificial light.

SolarWindow says that the coating could “reduce electricity costs by as much as 50 percent per year, provide 15 times the environmental benefits over other roof-top solar PV systems, and according to independently-validated engineering modeling, could achieve a one-year financial payback.”

“We are honored to be recognized by this distinguished panel of business leaders for our work in developing possibly the biggest single breakthrough in clean energy—converting the solar rays of the sun into electricity on skyscrapers the world over,” said John A. Conklin, president and CEO of SolarWindow.
