Federal and local authorities are investigating the falling death of a New Jersey architect in Midtown Manhattan on Thursday (Sept. 15) afternoon.

Bruno Travalja, 52, of Ridgewood, was said to have been working at a high-rise located near 52nd Street and 6th Avenue, when he fell from the building’s 47th floor to his death around 2:30 p.m., according to various reports.

According to Bruno Travalja’s Facebook profile, he was the owner of Crowne Architectural Systems of North Bergen, NJ. The 52-year-old died in a fall Thursday (Sept. 15).

Police say he landed between two buildings on 52nd and 53rd streets and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Dizzy Spell

Sources told the NY1 television outlet that Travalja knelt down to take a measurement and may have “got dizzy” when he stood up.

The New York Daily News reported that the architect had been wearing a safety harness but it wasn't tied to anything. The news outlet also said the ledge was protected by an 18-inch high parapet, citing an official.

Additional details about the fatal incident were not immediately available Friday (Sept. 16) morning.

Meanwhile, the city’s Department of Buildings, the New York Police Department and the U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration have opened investigations into Travalja’s death.

He is survived by a wife, Alexis, and three children, according to his obituary first posted on the Feeney Funeral Home website.

The Project

The building where the fall occurred is being converted from a hotel into condominiums and office space, according to the Real Deal New York. A glass barrier for the rooftop terrace was to be installed there, New York Daily News reported.

According to Travalja’s Facebook profile, he was the owner of Crowne Architectural Systems of North Bergen, NJ. The architect of record for the project is CentraRuddy Architecture.

According to Crowne’s website, the business specializes in curtain wall systems and exterior facades, boasting a portfolio of many buildings throughout New York City boroughs.
