London's 'Flower Tower' Design Revealed

Architecture firm HOK has unveiled renderings of the planned Spire London, set to become the tallest residential building in western Europe.

Plans were approved last February for the tower, to rise 771 feet over Canary Wharf, in London’s Tower Hamlets district. It is being built by Chinese developer Greenland Group and will have an estimated value of £800 million (about $1.06 billion).

Nautical History, Orchid Design

Designed by HOK’s Larry Malcic and Christopher Colosimo, the Spire is reportedly being dubbed the “Flower Tower,” for its petal-like silhouette. Greenland Group notes that the design was inspired by “the nautical history of the site,” once one of the country’s busiest docks, “and by the orchid, a flower cultivated in China for more than 3,000 years.”

Spire London's design was inspired by “the nautical history of the site,” once one of the country’s busiest docks, “and by the orchid, a flower cultivated in China for more than 3,000 years.”

The tapered design of the tower’s roof will allow for landscaped outdoor spaces for the upper units, the architects note. The building will also include louvres that allow for ventilation throughout.

“Bronze colored metal detailing on the lower floors and bronze colored feature fins on the pair of pavilion buildings either side of the tower complement the tan brickwork of the adjacent historic buildings around the dock basin,” the developer says.

The Interior

The bronze theme will continue inside, where interior designer Nicola Fontanella, of the firm Argent Design, is responsible for the lobby, with its nearly 20-foot ceilings. The lobby will feature an aquamarine, white and bronze color scheme, the developers say, along with terrazzo flooring.

The lobby will reportedly feature an aquamarine, white and bronze color scheme along with terrazzo flooring.

In addition to residences, the developer plans a sky bar, 35th-floor infinity pool, and “London’s highest cinema.” From the ninth floor up, the tower will feature 765 private-sale apartments. The bottom eight floors, according to Greenland Group, will be dedicated to affordable housing, with 96 units available. The architects also promise public spaces to benefit the surrounding community.

“Our scheme will revitalize this part of Canary Wharf and create a new prosperous environment that the whole community can enjoy,” said Setareh Neshati, senior planning manager for Greenland Group. “The carefully designed public realm will provide the most appropriate and balanced setting for the proposed residential building.”

The tapered design of the tower’s roof will allow for landscaped outdoor spaces for the upper units.

As part of the plans, Greenland Group will also develop 60 affordable units in the nearby Limehouse neighborhood.

Tallest Residential Building

When finished, Spire London will surpass the current tallest residential building in the U.K., St. George Wharf Tower, in Vauxhall, London, which stands at 594 feet.

The Renzo Piano-designed Shard, which stands at 1,016 feet in Southwark, has residences on floors 53-65, making them the highest apartments in the U.K., though that building is mixed-use. The penthouse residence in that building is reportedly 735 feet up.

Demolition on the Spire site has already begun. Plans indicate that piling should begin in early 2017, with a targeted opening date in 2020.
