From a restored historic mansion in Newport, RI, to the eye-catching designs of the Las Vegas Strip, the new issue of D+D In Depth explores significant projects and the architectural coating technologies employed.

The August 2016 issue, released via email Wednesday (Aug. 31) and available at this link, also features expert advice on antimicrobial and wood coatings.

In “Restoring a Gilded Age Icon: The Breakers, Newport, RI,” three architects from Architectural Preservation Studios PC (New York, NY) detail the painstaking restoration of the facades, roofs and gates at one of the area’s most notable mansions.

This month’s digital issue also highlights the building materials and waterproofing products utilized in pools and outdoor architectural features in Las Vegas, in “Design Solutions for the Vegas Strip,” written by technical writer Del Williams.

Further, the August issue takes a scientific look at antimicrobial coatings. Paint manufacturers, as well as governmental agencies and research laboratories, continue to develop coatings to kill or otherwise remove disease-causing microorganisms from surfaces in hospitals and other healthcare facilities. In addition to discussing the technology behind the various types of antimicrobial coatings currently on the market, expert Allen Zielnik also explores the effectiveness of such products in “The Invisible Menace: Antimicrobial Coatings to the Rescue.”

Zielnik also authors another feature in this month’s D+D In Depth, “From Stradivarius to Hardwood Floors: How Coatings Protect and Beautify Wood.” That article focuses on how the properties of wood, used as both a primary structural component and decorative surface, play a role in the selection and application of coatings.
