The American Architectural Manufacturers Association has released a new edition of its document on the testing and performance of solar reflective coatings.

AAMA 643-16, "Voluntary Specification, Performance Requirements and Test Procedures for Solar Reflective Finishes," was first release in 2013, but has been updated to clarify requirements regarding outdoor and accelerated testing, according to the AAMA.

What's Covered?

The document covers pigmented organic coatings applied to aluminum, fiber reinforced thermoset or wood and cellulosic composite profiles for windows, doors, wall panels, skylights sloped glazing and other architectural materials. It does not address coatings applied to vinyl.

"Advances in coatings technologies for architectural products have provided the opportunity to expand the use of solar reflective coatings," says Manny Mayer, architectural products manager at Tiger Drylac. "Selecting high-performance coatings with these solar reflective attributes can positively impact the energy efficiency associated with all exterior coated building components.”

The newly revised document is available as a download to AAMA members for $15, or non-members for $45.

The AAMA is an industry group that sets standards and certifications and performs education work related to the fenestration industry. It was founded in 1936 and offers more than 100 technical publications.
