Eight people were killed Friday (July 15)  in the elevator fall in Shandong province, in east China.

The unidentified victims were said to have been taken to a local hospital following the incident, but were all later pronounced dead, reports say, citing the government officials.

A cause of the elevator failure had not been reported Monday (July 18).

Construction accidents are frequent in China as regulations are often ignored to cut costs, according to reports.

In 2007, a construction elevator a residential project plunged 20 stories, killing 11 workers in Wuxi City in Jiangsu province, Reuters reported at the time. Six others who were also in the elevator were injured.

A string of recent incidents involving elevators and escalators in China has sparked a call for heightened maintenance and safety checks, according to Chinadaily.com.
