Though 2016 is only half over, paint manufacturers are looking ahead to 2017, and according to PPG, "Violet Verbena" will be the go-to hue.

The muted purple is PPG Paints’ Color of the Year 2017, and will appear in all four of the company’s residential color trend palettes for next year, according to a recent announcement.

Violet Verbena "fits with “the bohemian, gypset (gypsy-jetset) consumer lifestyle that has been trending recently,” according to PPG.

PPG calls Violet Verbena a “grayed-off, moody purple with a chameleon-like presence,” and says it fits with “the bohemian, gypset (gypsy-jetset) consumer lifestyle that has been trending recently.”

Four Color Themes

Violet Verbena finds its way into PPG’s four color themes for 2017: “Hourglass,” “Es/sence,” “Impower” and “Biocentric,” all loosely themed around the four elements of earth, water, fire and air. In some situations, it’s used for its purple hue; in others, it’s employed as more of a neutral.

“Consumers now embrace the middle ground between masculine and feminine, young and old, and work and leisure. Violet Verbena’s blending of gray and violet reflects that middle ground,” said PPG’s senior color marketing manager, Dee Schlotter.

Violet Verbena

Violet Verbena finds its way into all four of PPG's residential color themes for 2017.

Hourglass, the manufacturer says, offers “a classic palette with a contemporary spin,” mixing dark hues like burgundy with neutrals to speak to the earth element. Es/sence, inspired by water, includes predominant blues and greens.

Impower, associated with fire, includes brighter tones (Red Licorice, Crushed Pineapple). Biocentric, inspired by air, includes “space-inspired hues,” with blues and greens offset by dark tones like Witchcraft.

The trends, PPG notes, will figure into its retail marketing for the PPG Paints, PPG Porter Paints and PPG Pittsburgh Paints lines.

Recommend that PPG drop the derogatory "gypset/gypsy-jetset" moniker. Can't believe that one made it out of the marketing department.

Tim, thank you for reaching out to us. The term “gypset” is a current design style term that refers to an eclectic, artistic, bohemian type of carefree lifestyle coined with "jetsetter" - a type of person that prefers to rent instead of buy and have less material goods. Coming from that lifestyle and historic references are patterns and colors. Violet Verbena - a purple falls into this lifestyle category. Let me know if you have any further questions. ...and is derived from the derogatory/insulting racial/cultural term "Gypsy" for a historically mistreated group.
