Dry Rot Shutters Zoo Building

An iconic 55-year-old entrance to a California zoo will be repaired after dry rot was discovered in roof beams.

Sacramento Zoo officials have closed down the largest of three signature entrance structures—featuring inverted curved roofs or hyperbolic paraboloids—to complete the repair project, local sources say.

The Mid-century Modern structures were built in 1961 as part of a renovation project, designed by Rickey + Brooks. The zoo itself was constructed in 1927.

Originally, the Sacramento Zoo entrance also served as a concession stand for visitors to the surrounding William Land Park.

The largest building served as a hub for the zoo’s educational programs, until dry rot was recently found. The smaller two buildings serve as entrances.

In addition to dry rot, some structural bowing also raised concern that the roof could cave in, officials told local media outlets.

A $30K Fix

Zoo officials say they will spend $30,000 to install temporary steel beams to support the structure and make it safe to use. That fix will only last 5 years, reports add.

“For right now we’re just trying to get it so we can open the door and go inside,” Tonja Candelaria, a zoo spokeswoman, told a CBS affiliate.

Candelaria said officials were discussing long-term solutions to preserve the structures, as many zoo patrons hope to see the buildings saved for future generations. The buildings were found eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places, according to a survey completed in 2012.

The Sacramento Zoo is home to more than 140 native, rare and endangered species. It is operated by the Sacramento Zoological Society.
