A 16th century site in Indonesia’s bustling capital is getting a refreshed look in a bid to become a United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization World Heritage Site.

Jakarta’s historic Kota Tua “old town” area is being revitalized, AkzoNobel recently announced, noting that the effort is part of the Amsterdam-based coatings manufacturer’s Human Cities campaign.

The Jakarta History Museum in Kota Tua will be getting repainted in original colors as part of the project.

Regarded as an important cultural and historical icon, Kota Tua is home to several landmark buildings. The area, once an international trade hub for spices, teas, coffees and silks, is in the running to become the country's ninth site on the UNESCO World Heritage list, with a final decision expected in mid-2017.

2 Phase Project

The first phase of the project will include repainting the Jakarta History Museum (Museum Fatahillah), Museum Seni Rupa and the Kota Intan bridge, according to AkzoNobel. One hundred AkzoNobel employee volunteers will help repaint the history museum, the company said.

Phase two will include the restoration of Museum Bahari and Museum Wayang, while shelters, bridges and flyovers in other parts of Jakarta will be repainted.

The landmarks will be painted in their original color scheme to preserve Jakarta’s rich history, according to Jun de Dios, director of AkzoNobel Decorative Paints Indonesia.

Human Cities

The company’s Human Cities initiative is designed to help cities become more liveable.

"We are honored to have partnered with the Government of Jakarta to help restore these iconic landmarks, which represent the city's living history," said Jeremy Rowe, managing director of AkzoNobel's Decorative Paints business in South East and South Asia and Middle East.

“The work we are doing in Kota Tua is a great example of what we are trying to achieve and is one of many Human Cities projects we are committed to supporting around the world."
