Classic Victorians with a fresh coat of paint are at the center of a competition from the Chicago Paint and Coatings Association this summer.

The contest, dubbed the Chicago Area Finest Painted Ladies and Her Court Competition, calls for anyone with a worthy paint job on their house—especially, but not necessarily, their old Victorian—to enter for a chance to win.

The competition is named for the classic “painted lady,” the Victorian house painted in three or more colors.

The competition is named for the classic “painted lady,” the Victorian house painted in three or more colors. The concept of the painted lady began on the West Coast; perhaps the most iconic examples are the row of houses near Alamo Square in San Francisco that were immortalized in the opening credits of the TV show Full House.

Now Chicago-area owners of painted ladies—or any other kind of house that uses color in an interesting way—could win a plaque commemorating their work.

Color and Application

The competition is open to houses painted between Labor Day 2015 and Labor Day 2016. Categories aren’t quite ironed out, but professionally painted and DIY projects are welcome, and color and application will definitely factor into judging.

The “and Her Court” portion of the name denotes the non-painted-lady entrants: Tudors, colonials, craftsmen, essentially any other sort of classic house that might still make a splash in a painting contest.

The application for the competition is available here.
