Authorities are investigating the cause of a recent blaze at a paint and coatings factory in Norfolk, MA.

One worker was injured in a fire that broke out around 1:30 p.m. Thursday (April 14), according to The Sun Chronicle.

Camger Coatings Systems Inc. manufactures coatings in Norfolk, MA.

Citing officials, the report said the fire started in a mixing room at the plant operated by Camger Coatings Systems Inc. and was under control at about 2 p.m.

The company declined to comment Monday (April 18).

Potential for Explosion

Approximately 50 firefighters and 12 fire trucks were called to the scene due to the danger of a possible explosion, the report notes.

“There are Class I flammables,” Fire Chief Coleman Bushnell told The Sun Chronicle. “That means they are very volatile.”

Police also blocked off a section of roadway nearby.

Worker Injured

The injured employee, who has not been identified, was said to have been involved in the mixing of a solution where the fire originated. The worker was taken via helicopter to a local hospital and treated for facial burns, Bushnell told the local newspaper.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the State Fire Marshal’s Office, the report said.

Federal workplace safety authorities are also investigating the incident, according to an Occupational Safety and Health Administration spokesman.

The company produces adhesives, lacquers, pre-catalyzed lacquers, conversion varnish, stains, waterborne products, sealers and topcoats for wood, metal, plastics and specialty applications.

The coatings manufacturer has a history of OSHA violations, according to the agency’s database. In June 2006, the company was issued a $1,750 proposed fine for two serious and one other-than-serious violations relating to lead hazards. The company settled that case informally, paying a fine of $875.

Pre-Fire Plan

Bushnell told The Sun Chronicle that the fire department has maintained a detailed pre-fire plan for the company’s plant, noting that department staff has spent time getting familiar with the operation and hazards present.

“Camger’s management works very cooperatively with the department to ensure the safety of their employees, first responders and the community. This relationship certainly contributed to preventing a disaster in terms of a more serious fire with environmental impact.”

According to Camger’s website, the family-owned company was founded in 1971.
