Flame Retardant Market Remains Hot

The global demand for flame retardant chemicals is expected to surge in the coming years.

The market, valued at $6 billion in 2014, is anticipated to reach $10 billion by 2020, growing at a CAGR (compound annual growth rate) of around 10 percent between 2015 and 2020.

That’s the conclusion of Zion Research; the market research firm recently published “Flame Retardant Chemicals (Aluminum Trihydrate (ATH), Antimony Oxides, Bromine, Chlorine, Organophosphorus and Others) Market for Building & Construction, Electronics, Automotive & Transportation, Wires & Cables, Textiles, and Other End-users: Global Industry Perspective, Comprehensive Analysis, and Forecast, 2014 – 2020.”

In terms of volume, the report says globally, the flame retardant chemicals market stood at 2.5 million tons in 2014.

The report provides a view of the market by segment based on products, end-users and regions.

Flame Retardants Overview

Used in a variety of industries, flame-retardant chemicals are added to manufactured materials, such as surface finishes and coatings, plastics and textiles, to “inhibit, suppress, or delay the production of flames to prevent the spread of fire,” according to Zion Research.

In recent years, the use of some flame-retardant chemicals has been questioned, as studies have linked the materials to health problems. Some areas have responded to those concerns by banning the use of certain flame-retardant chemicals in certain products.

Flame retardants may be mixed with the base material (additive flame retardants) or chemically bonded to it (reactive flame retardants), according to Zion.

Flame retardants are made to minimize the risk of a fire from starting and limiting the spread of fire.

Some of the most widely used flame-retardant chemicals include bromine, phosphorus, nitrogen and chlorine. Some inorganic compounds are also used as a flame retardant, either alone or as part of a flame retardant system in combination with bromine, phosphorus or chlorine.

Flame retardant chemicals can be generally classified as halogenated and non-halogenated flame retardants, the report notes.

Industry Drivers

The global market for these materials is primarily driven by technological advancements in fire safety solutions and regulations.

According to the report, strong regulations regarding fire safety of buildings and construction and automobiles have resulted in strong growth of fire retardant chemicals in the recent past. The report predicts that growth will continue.

Minnesota turned up the heat on flame-retardant chemicals, enacting one of the nation's most restrictive bans in 2015. The state baned four chemicals used in upholstered residential furniture and children's products; see "MN Enacts Ban on Flame Retardants."

It also suggests the use of flame-retardant chemicals in the plastic and textile industries is growing in popularity among end-users due to several operational benefits offered by these materials.

Major growth restraints for the market are “toxicity issues related to use of halogenated flame retardants and the high cost of non-halogenated flame retardants,” according to the report.

Key Product Segments

Aluminum trihydrate (ATH), antimony oxides, bromine, chlorine, organophosphorus and others are the key product segments of flame-retardant chemicals market, the report indicates.

Bromine was the largest segment of the flame retardant chemicals market with over 25 percent share in 2014. However, stringent environmental regulations on the usage of bromine in electrical and electronics in Europe and North America are expected to hold back the growth of this segment during the forecast period, the firm suggests.

Organophosphorus is expected to be one of the fastest-growing product segments of the market in study period.

Building and Construction Segment Leads

In terms of demand, building and construction was the largest end-use industry segment of the flame-retardant chemicals market and accounted for more than 30 percent of the global market share in 2014.

Rising building and construction activities in emerging countries is a major factor driving demand for flame retardant chemicals in this application.

Growth By Region

Asia Pacific dominated the global flame retardant chemicals market in 2014 followed by North America and Europe.

In terms of volume, Asia Pacific accounted for more than 40 percent of the global flame retardant chemicals market in 2014 and is expected to be the fastest-growing market in the near future, the report indicates.

North America accounted for the second-largest market share of the flame retardant chemicals market in 2014. Furthermore, Latin America, the Middle East and Africa are also projected to grow at a steady pace due to growing automotive and construction industry in these regions.

Zion Research said major players in the global flame-retardant chemicals market include AkzoNobel N.V., BASF SE, Dow Chemical Company, DuPont, Clariant and Lanxess AG.
