U.S. workplace health and safety officials have announced that the third annual National Safety Stand-Down will take place May 2-6, 2016.

The week-long event is focused on reminding and educating employers and workers in the construction industry of the dangerous consequences of falls.

Falls remain the leading cause of death in the industry; they accounted for 349 out of 874 total construction deaths in 2014.

Over 4 million construction workers have participated in past national stand-down events.

The National Safety Stand-Down is organized by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and the Center for Construction Research and Training.

National Pause to Educate

Throughout the week, employers are encouraged to pause during their workday for topic discussions, demonstrations and training on how to recognize and prevent falls.

More than 4 million workers participated in the past two stand-down events, according to OSHA.

OSHA hosts the official National Safety Stand-Down website, which includes information on how to conduct successful stand-downs and other relevant resources.

The event is a part of OSHA’s ongoing fall prevention campaign, Stop Falls.
