The World of Concrete was held Feb. 1-5 in Las Vegas.

A key focus of the five-day event that ends today (Feb. 5) was education—the international event centered around more than 100 expert-led seminars and interactive workshops, in addition to live demonstrations throughout the exhibit halls, both indoor and outdoor.

Seminar topics included industry trends, troubleshooting concrete cracks, polishing concrete best practices, waterproofing and corrosion protection, as well as understanding and selecting concrete coatings and treatments.

New Products Featured

Hundreds of new products were also showcased during the conference. D+D In Depth, Durability + Design’s new digital monthly, covered many of the coatings-related products that were displayed in a preview article published ahead of the show. Many exhibitors submitted their products to the Most Innovative Product Award Program. Attendees vote on the products they judge as innovative. The contenders were on display in the Central Hall. The winners will be announced following the conference.

Langaard
BASF

Eric Langaard, of Schoenfelder Renovations, spoke about his experiences using BASF's new hydrophobic coating.

Moreover, several manufacturers held press conferences to discuss industry game-changing technologies. Among those was Shakopee, MN-based BASF.

The company highlighted a recently introduced hydrophobic wall coating technology—MasterProtect C 350. The 100 percent acrylic coating was engineered to repel water and dirt and protect vertical concrete, concrete masonry units, stucco and masonry.

An early adopter of the hydrophobic coating, Eric Langaard, a project manager and partner for Schoenfelder Renovations located in Minnetonka, MN, was on hand to discuss how the product performed on several recent projects including a Kohl’s department store exterior. He noted the “ease of application of the finish” as well as its aesthetics attributes.

Decorative Concrete Awards

L.M. Scofield also honored nearly a dozen designers and contractors in its annual “Decorative Concrete Awards” ceremony held Wednesday (Feb. 3). The contest, known as “The Scofies,” highlights the artistic abilities of architectural concrete.

Capitol Decorative Concrete's project in Charleston Marina Resort is featured on L.M. Scofield's website. The project team was honored in the company's 2015 Decorative Concrete Awards program.

This year, the company said it received 75 entries. The contest is judged by a panel of editors and industry professionals. Jill Speegle, Durability + Design News’ editor, served as a judge in this year’s competition.

Among the 2015 winners, was Capitol Decorative Concrete. The Charleston, SC-based company created a “stunning true-to-life navigational map” of the Charleston harbor inside a 3,300-square-foot retail space at the Charleston Marina Resort, according to Scofield.

Durability + Design also took part in the show as an exhibitor in the South Hall, inviting concrete industry professionals to learn about the brand’s resources and coverage areas related to concrete coatings and related materials.
