With college basketball conference play in full gear, the University of Mississippi has another “win” to celebrate. Ole Miss recently opened the doors of its new $96.5 million multi-purpose arena in Oxford, MS.

The Pavilion at Ole Miss is the home court to the university’s basketball programs and also hosts graduation ceremonies, concerts and other university-wide events.

Work on the facility began July 2014 and was completed earlier this month, according to a project announcement. A weekend celebration, including a ribbon-cutting and the first men’s and women’s games, took place Jan. 7-10.

After two and a half years of construction, the University of Mississippi has opened its new high-profile arena, said to be a campus cornerstone.

University officials describe the project as the “crown jewel” of the Forward Together fundraising campaign and expect the arena to become a cornerstone of campus life and fan favorite.

Team Effort

Designed by AECOM Technology, an architecture and engineering firm based in Kansas City, MO, the 225,000 square-feet facility boasts a curved and colonnaded entrance façade that echoes The Pavilion’s sweeping, curved roof.

BL Harbert International (Birmingham, AL)—the builder behind several other Southeastern Conference arenas, including Auburn University's basketball arena—led the construction of the project.

The facility consists of a three-story, structural steel frame supporting steel trusses, according to project details.

AECOM says the series of Doric columns at the facility’s main entrance reference the southern traditional architectural style of the Ole Miss campus.

The Pavilion offers seating for more than 9,600 fans, includes a concourse, locker rooms, suites for players and coaches, training facilities, and premium-club areas: a Courtside Club, All-American Suites and The Pavilion Club.

A five-story parking garage, with more than 800 spaces, was also built to accommodate both fans and students at Ole Miss.

Raise the Roof

Figuring predominately in the game plan for the project was its barrel roof.

The roof was clad in metal paneling manufactured by ACI Building Systems LLC and coated with Valspar’s Fluropon 70 percent PVDF coating in Terra Cotta, described as a rich earth-tone hue.

Valspar says the coating used features dirt and stain resistant properties, and durability in all sorts of weather conditions. The Ultra-Lok panel system is mechanically seamed to offer weather resistance and is expected to be practically maintenance free, according to ACI.

The metal panel system and coating combination will provide the university with a long-lasting roofing system, Valspar notes.

Other coatings and finishes used on the project were supplied by Tnemec and Sherwin-Williams, according to the general contractor.
