Pittsburgh-based global coatings giant PPG reports it has begun using chloride-based titanium dioxide (TiO2) produced by Henan Billions Chemicals Co. Ltd in China.

The 366,000-square-meter plant used to produce the chloride-grade TiO2 is located in the Henan Province and currently has the capacity to produce 100,000 metric tons of chloride-grade TiO2 per year with the ability to expand.

Titantium dioxide is used in paints and coatings to provide whiteness as well as durability and hiding characteristics.

The TiO2 is used to produce standard grades of PPG's paint and coating products, the company announced in December.

TiO2 is an important raw material in paint and coatings production, accounting for 60-70 percent of the global consumption of TiO2. The white, inorganic pigment offers durability, hiding and whiteness characteristics.

“Our partnership with Henan Billions exemplifies PPG’s commitment to securing high-quality supplies of titanium dioxide required to support our business growth,” Michael H. McGarry, PPG president and CEO, said in a statement.

Henan Billions is located in Jiaozuo City, Henan Province, and had 2014 sales of about $350 million.

Agreement Details

In 2012, PPG agreed to license certain chloride-based technologies for the manufacture of TiO2 to Henan Billions for use on a global basis. PPG also established a long-term supply agreement to purchase TiO2 from Henan Billions.

The partners had originally set out to begin production in the first quarter of 2015.

The coatings company says it has supported the startup of Henan Billions’ new facility, which was completed in October 2014, with quality and process improvements, analytical testing and product evaluation.

PPG marked the completion of Henan Billions' chloride-based titanium dioxide plant in October 2014.

“This latest accomplishment with our strategic partner Henan Billions is a milestone in our relationship,” McGarry added.

PPG notes that it may also license its technology to other TiO2 producers.

Price Hike

Meanwhile, in late December, the world’s largest producer of TiO2, Chemours, announced a decision to raise the price per metric ton to $150 starting in Jan. 1. Chemours is a spin-off of DuPont performance chemicals businesses.

Analysts say the move has prompted other big players in the industry to also hike the raw material price, noting that the chemical giants have been unable to reverse declines in the paint pigment business.
