The wait is over and the town of Minturn, CO, is relieved to hear it has the best loo in the land.

The town’s “Mine Passageway” public restroom, created with the help of a 3-D printer, triumphed over toilets from New Hampshire to California in the 2015 America’s Best Bathroom contest, hosted by Cintas.

Town planners, architects and plumbers helped to create the Mine Passageway public restrooms in Minturn, CO.

Now in its 14th year, the competition aims to convey a message that “restroom hygiene matters,” organizers say. Ten finalists were selected based on cleanliness, visual appeal, innovation, functionality and unique design elements. Then, thousands cast online votes for their favorite facility.

Coming in No. 2...and 3

The No. 2 place “to go” was The Music Hall in Portsmouth, NH, Cintas announced.

Charleston Distilling in Charleston, SC, came in third in the competition.

The facilities were built in March 2015 to reflect Minturn’s rich mining history and serve residents and visitors as a piece of “functional art.”

In addition to bragging rights, the town of Minturn received a $2,500 credit to spend on Cintas services, like restroom cleaning and supplies. The top three finalists won a complimentary deep clean of their restroom, valued at $500.

Victory is Mine

The Mine Passageway, built in March 2015, reflects Minturn’s rich mining history and serves residents and visitors as a piece of “functional art.”

“Making the humble public restroom into functional art was both a design challenge and a joy,” said Janet Hawkinson, director of design and project management in Minturn. “We are gratified to be recognized for achieving that and for creating a project that reflects the uniqueness of the community.”

Officials say it took many players—from the planning commission, town council, public works department, architects, concrete workers, steel artists and plumbers—to make the can resemble a passageway into a Rocky Mountain mine.

“The wooden walls are stacked with more than 300 pieces of plywood along a twisting path to create a one-of-a-kind fixture,” according to the Huffington Post, noting that the two restrooms cost about $100,000 to construct.
