A French National museum and a sports hall of fame in Natchitoches, LA, are among 10 projects recently recognized for their excellence in concrete construction.

The American Concrete Institute (ACI) announced the winners of its first Excellence in Concrete Construction Awards Monday (Nov. 9) at the Concrete Convention & Expo in Denver.

ACI honored 10 projects selected from five categories. The awards were “created to honor the visions of the most creative projects in the concrete industry, while providing a platform to recognize concrete innovation, technology, and excellence across the globe,” according to an ACI statement.

Overall Excellence

The MuCEM: Museum of European Mediterranean Civilizations also received the association’s Excellence Award, which ACI characterized as the highest honor.

Located in Marseille, France, the museum is “an icon of urban rejuvenation located on the banks of the 2,600-year-old harbor at Marseille,” according to ACI.

The MuCEM: Museum of European Mediterranean Civilizations received ACI's overall Excellence Award and took first place in the Low Rise Buildings category.

Visited by 3.4 million people during the first 15 months it was open, the three-story exhibition museum building is the first French National museum built outside Paris, the ACI said.

Located at the end of a pier where Mediterranean immigrants once landed, “the structure blends with the surrounding mineral and stone landscape, presenting a veiled, cubic appearance that is linked to the city with ultra-thin footbridges,” according to the ACI.

ACI also said the museum building boasts efficient, wide exhibition halls that are surrounded by a “sheltered climbing promenade facing the sea up to the scenic terrace.”

In addition to winning the Excellence Award, the MuCEM: Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilizations—which was submitted for consideration by the ACI Paris Chapter—took first place in the Low Rise Buildings category.

The Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame and Northwest Louisiana History Museum, in Natchitoches, LA, took second place in the same category. It was submitted by the Louisiana Chapter, ACI said in its statement.

Al Hamra Business Tower, in Kuwait City, Kuwait, took first place in the High-Rise Buildings category.

The organization also issued a call for entries for the 2016 Excellence in Concrete Construction Awards. Submissions are due by Feb. 15, 2016. Each chapter or international partner can submit two entries, ACI said. Visit the ACI Awards website for more information.
