A market research company that specializes in polymer and chemical industries has released its findings on the global consumption of coatings, adhesives, sealants and inks (CASI) for 2014.

Kusumgar, Nerlfi and Growney Inc. said in a statement released Tuesday (Nov. 3) that the total global consumption of the CASI market was 54.1 million tons worth $182.6 billion in 2014. Volume is projected to grow at a rate of 5 percent for coatings, adhesives and sealants, but inks are projected only to grow at a rate of 2 percent per year, the company said.

Coatings Takes Top Billings

Coatings consumption took the lion’s share of the CASI group, representing just over 70 percent of the volume for 2014. Adhesives, the next-highest group, comes in at 19 percent, the report said.

Coatings consumption took the lion’s share of the CASI group, representing just over 70 percent of the volume for 2014, according to market research company Kusumgar, Nerlfi and Growney Inc.

Regionally, the Asia-Pacific market was the leader in global consumption of CASI in 2014, with 46 percent of the group consuming those products. China alone takes 28 percent of the global tons of CASI, according to the analysis.

The construction industry took almost 60 percent of the global volume of CASI products in 2014, and it also took 44 percent of the money spent. The report said that coatings represented three-quarters of the construction volume, with architectural coatings representing the majority of that segment.

Architectural coatings took the majority of the volume and money spent in the construction industry, which was the largest industry segment of CASI in 2014.

The automotive industry had the second-highest market segment share, according to the report. Automotive coatings represented 80 percent of the volume and the value of the automotive industry segment of CASI in 2014.

Other Market Shares, Looking Ahead

Packaging took 9 percent of the volume and 10 percent of the money spent on the CASI market that year, the company said. Of that, about one-half of the value and 30 percent of the volume used went toward inks. Adhesives made up 44 percent of the packaging tons while taking 28 percent of the segment’s value.

For 2015, Kusumgar, Nerlfi and Growney Inc. said it is projecting the U.S. coatings market to consume 8.8 billion dry pounds valued at about $28 billion.

The Elmwood Park, NJ-based consulting firm said it will release the actual 2015 coatings numbers with its five-year report, “The U.S. Paint & Coatings Industry, 2015-2020,” during the second quarter of 2016.
