The Sherwin-Williams' board of directors has tapped a man with more than 30 years of experience with the company to serve as its next chief executive officer.

John G. Morikis, who has served as the Cleveland-based coating giant’s chief operating officer for the past nine years, will assume the CEO role on Jan. 1, 2016, the company announced Monday (Oct. 19).

He will take over for current CEO Christopher M. Connor, who will become the company’s executive chairman, the company said in a statement.

‘Key Architect’

“This announcement today marks the successful culmination of a multi-year organizational succession plan to identify the absolute best candidate to assume leadership of the company,” said Connor.

John G. Morikis, the current COO of Sherwin-Williams, will become the company's CEO on Jan. 1, 2016.

“John has been an important member of our senior leadership team for many years and is one of the key architects of the company’s current organizational structure and strategy. His success over the years is a direct result of focusing on customer needs, his in-depth knowledge of the coatings market and his dedication to hiring and developing terrific people.

“With this transition, John becomes only the ninth CEO in Sherwin-Williams’ 150 year history,” Connor continued. “He is the right leader, and he is surrounded by the right team, to take Sherwin-Williams to the next level.”

Morikis, 52, also was elected immediately to the company’s board of directors. He joined Sherwin-Williams in 1984 as a management trainee in the company’s Paint Stores Group. As COO, Morikis helped to grow the company from $7.8 billion to $11 billion in revenues and earnings, the company said.

In the Paint Stores Group alone—of which Morikis served as president at one point during his 31-year tenure—the company credits the incoming CEO with increasing the number of stores from 2,400 to 3,100 and generating an additional $2 billion in sales, according to the Sherwin-Williams statement.

Current CEO Christopher M. Connor will stay with Sherwin-Wiliams as the company’s executive chairman.

John Stropki, the company’s lead director, said Morikis was chosen to become the next CEO after a “diligent and thorough selection process.

“The Board is pleased that Chris and John will continue to work together to execute the company’s long term strategy to meet and exceed the expectations of our customers, shareholders and employees,” said Stropki.

Leadership Roles

In addition to his role at Sherwin-Williams, the incoming CEO serves on the board of Fortune Brands Home & Security Inc.; the Joint Center for Housing Studies Policy Advisory Board at Harvard University; and the Board of Directors of the University Hospital Ahuja Medical Center.

Morikis holds bachelor’s degrees in business administration and psychology from Saint Joseph’s College in Rensselear, IN, and a master’s degree in business from National Louis University in Evanston, IL.
