In an effort to inspire unity, a resident artist in Arizona has painted a sky-blue mural on the border fence in Nogales, Mexico.

Ana Teresa Fernandez is an Arizona State University Performance in the Borderlands-sponsored artist.

The mural is designed to optically erase the border fence from the perception of the viewer.

Her mural, painted on Tuesday (Oct. 13), is designed to optically erase the fence or a portion of the fence from the perception of the viewer.

Sky Mural

“No words, no text, just an illusion of sky,” Fernandez told a local NBC News affiliate, KVOA.

She says the project, called "Bringing Down the Sky," seeks to break down the cultural barrier between Mexico and the United States.

The mural was sponsored by the Border Community Alliance in collaboration with its Mexican partner, FESAC.

“There's a level of acceptance that needs to happen in order to have more peaceful interactions with each other," said Fernandez. “We might speak different languages and cultures, but we are all under the same sky.”

About the Sponsors, Artist

The mural was sponsored by the Border Community Alliance in partnership with Fundación del Empresariado Sonorense (FESAC). The groups work to unite the cross border community through education, advocacy and collaboration.

Fernandez was born and raised in Tampico, Veracruz, Mexico, and received her MFA in 2006 from the San Francisco Art Institute.
