A California mural artist was shot and killed as he was working on an art piece under a freeway overpass in Oakland that was designed to help deter violence.

Antonio Ramos, 27, was helping to paint the mural Tuesday (Sept. 29) under an Interstate 580 overpass in West Oakland when he got into an argument with another person who was not part of the artist group, according to multiple media reports.

The gunman, police have said, shot Ramos and then ran away, according to a Fox News report.

‘Isolated Incident’

Ramos was working on a mural called the Oakland Super Heroes Mural Project, which was sponsored by Attitudinal Healing Connection of Oakland. The group seeks to stop violence by inspiring people with art and education, according to Fox News.

Officials have said that nothing in the mural—which includes paintings of trees, a creek and Victorian Era houses—sparked the violence.

“I think this is an isolated incident,” said Aeeshah Clottey, one of the founders of the sponsor group.

According to a report in the Los Angeles Times, Ramos joined the project in 2012 after seeing another mural and asking if he could help.

“From that day on he was working on the project every day,” the group said on its Facebook page.

In His Honor

Friends of Ramos held a vigil for him Wednesday (Sept. 30) at the site of the shooting. Several took to social media to express their grief.

“A friend of mines was murdered while painting a mural in West Oakland,” wrote @KREAYSHAWN on Twitter. “I have gr8 memories w/ u. RIP Antonio Ramos.”

Friends also established a YouCaring page for Ramos to raise funds in his honor. According to the page’s organizer, she raised the fundraising goal the day of the shooting because so many people had already donated.

As of Friday (Oct. 2), the crowdfunding campaign had raised more than $30,000 of its $40,000 goal with 88 days still left in the campaign.

Clottey told Fox News that Ramos’ death was emblematic of a larger issue.

“This is indicative of a global problem,” she said. “And we want to look at ways to inspire peace.”

A local ABC affiliate also reported that the group plans to paint Ramos’ portrait at the spot where he was killed.

“A lot of us are just speechless, we were totally unprepared for something like this to happen,” said Patrick Jackson, a friend of Ramos, in an interview with ABC7.

Meanwhile, several sources indicate that police have not arrested anyone in connection with the shooting but are continuing to investigate.

Oakland is a disgusting " third world country", where the overpaid "police" do NOTHING

Angry disposition combined with a gun. It is so easy to kill someone rather than walk way from a disagreement. The gun man or gun woman will always run away. Catch me if you can. When will it ever stop? It will never stop. The easy thing is to shoot first. Oakland is not better nor worse than a community college in Roseburg OR or an elementary school or a synagogue or a movie theater.
