The United States Green Building Council has tapped one of its own to take the lead when current CEO and co-founder Rick Fedrizzi leaves the organization at year’s end in 2016.

The USGBC revealed in an announcement released by the board of directors Tuesday (Sept. 8) that its current COO, Mahesh Ramanujam, was unanimously chosen to step into the role of CEO—its first new CEO in more than ten years.

“As a founder, I could not be happier, and as a CEO, I could not be more satisfied that I’ll be able to leave USGBC in the best hands possible,” Fedrizzi said in the statement.

“Since Mahesh first joined USGBC in 2009, he has transformed every corner of the organization, focusing on high performance and putting the needs of our customers and community members first. His personal core values are deeply aligned with our mission and his comprehensive understanding of our work make him the ideal leader for this role.”

USGBC COO Mahesh Ramanujam has been selected as incoming CEO and is slated to take over when Rick Fedrizzi steps down in late 2016.

Fedrizzi, who co-founded the company 22 years ago and served as president and CEO since 2003, announced in June his plans to exit the association.

“I’m deeply honored that Rick and the Board have placed their trust in me,” Ramanujam said in the news release, “and I will serve the organization and our movement with a long-term vision—keeping innovation as a top priority.

“As USGBC’s CEO, I pledge to continually modernize and enhance our capabilities and performance to ensure we deliver the future that our founders envisioned.”

Global Business Experience

Ramanujam had more than 20 years of global business experience under his belt before he came to USGBC in 2009.

Earlier in his career, he served as COO for Emergys, a business transformation consulting firm in North Carolina, where he participated in initiatives that included the sale of IBM PC systems to Lenovo and its printer divisions to Ricoh, as well as the establishment of Lenovo’s global manufacturing and operating platforms.

He came on board at USGBC as its senior vice president, technology, and was later named COO in 2011.

Ramanujam has been with USGBC since 2009; he was named COO in 2011 and president of the Green Building Certification Institute in 2012.

When he became president of the Green Building Certification Institute (a third-party organization established to provide credentialing and certification services for LEED, USGBC’s rating system) in Dec. 2012, he worked to broaden its offerings to serve a wider audience. These changes prompted to group to change its name to Green Business Certification Inc. earlier this year.

“Mahesh has a highly impressive track record of success in both his role as USGBC’s COO and as President of Green Business Certification Inc.,” said USGBC Board Chair Marge Anderson.

“He is a proven leader who has exhaustive knowledge of the organization, respect from its volunteer leadership and strong support from its team. He has extensive global experience and broad business acumen. He is the perfect choice to lead the organization into the future.”

Fedrizzi echoed these sentiments in an email sent out separately from the news release. In it he shared the appointment and his congratulations, adding that Ramanujam’s “track record since joining USGBC has been stellar. He knows the organization inside out, and he’s worked to both simplify our processes and scale our global reach...He is the perfect individual to lead the next chapter in USGBC’s evolution.”

A native of Chennai, India, Ramanujam holds a bachelor’s of engineering in computer sciences from Annamalai University, where he began his career in software and systems analysis and product development.
