This recent time-lapse video shows the making of a 49-foot-wide mural, inspired by overcoming adversity and friendship.

The colorful mural, Through the Cracks: Spider-Man Mural, was painted by artist Ilya Viryachev this spring in Vancouver, according to his website.

Inspired Creation

According to the video description provided by the artist on Vimeo, the project was originally named Through the Cracks, “because just like weeds that weren't supposed to grow from the asphalt, people somehow overcome adversities and outrun themselves and others to reach success.”

He developed the idea further to pay tribute to one of his friends, who is also depicted in the mural, and a fan of the fictional superhero Spider-Man.

Referring to his friend, Viryachev writes, “His hard work and persistence helped him break into the animation industry which is a really competitive field.”

Through the Cracks: Spider-Man Mural appears on the side of the artist’s studio.

Familiar Materials

Viryachev gave the Vancouver Sun some additional details about the materials he used.

“I’m curious about spray paint but I have a traditional painting background and ended up using brushes and rollers,” he said. “The brush work just felt familiar to me and the latex paint was quite nice to work with.”

The artist says he has many other ideas for murals and is on the look-out for walls, according to the newspaper.

How refreshing to see some cool art done with cans of latex paint.
