J.D. Power examined six key factors of the painting “experience”: application; product offerings; durability; price; design guides; and warranty/guarantee.

The study found that 23 percent of customers had taken on both interior and exterior projects within the past 12 months, according to J.D. Power. The findings also show that 65 percent of customers selected the same brand for interior and exterior paint products.

Interior Rankings

J.D. Power examined six key factors of the painting “experience”: application, product offerings, durability; price, design guides, and warranty/guarantee.

Interior Paints

Behr ranked highest among interior paint brands, with a score of 823 on a 1,000-point scale, followed closely by The Sherwin-Williams Company (821) and Benjamin Moore (820).

Behr was found to perform particularly well in the durability and warranty/guarantee factors, according to J.D. Power.

Exterior Rankings

Clark + Kensington took the top spot in terms of customer satisfaction among exterior paint brands with a score of 828.

The brand stood out in terms of application, design guides, durability, price and product offerings, according to J.D. Power.

Exterior Paints

Sherwin-Williams ranked second with 818 points, followed closely by Pittsburgh with 815.

Retailer Rankings

J.D. Power also measured satisfaction with retailers across five key factors of the paint shopping and purchasing “experience”: merchandise; price; sales; and promotions; staff and service; and store facility.

Sherwin-Williams’ merchandise, staff and service and store facility factors propelled the retailer to the top spot on that list, with a score of 831.

Retailer Rankings

Ace Hardware took the second slot with a score of 818, and Menards (813) rounded out the top three retailers in the rankings, J.D. Power reported.

What Customers Want

In addition the rankings, J.D. Power made some observations regarding paint customers.

"When taking on different types of painting projects, customers want a brand they can trust to meet their various needs and a single retailer that will provide them with guidance on how to achieve a favorable result," according to Christina Cooley, director of home improvement industries at J.D. Power.

Customers prefer not to visit multiple stores, Cooley said.

“They prefer a one-stop-shopping experience that meets all of their needs, which creates a win-win for customers who are satisfied with the convenience of a single source and for brands and retailers that can capture a larger share of wallet.”

The 2015 Paint Satisfaction study is based on responses from 7,840 customers who purchased interior and/or exterior paint within the previous 12 months. The study was fielded in January and February 2015.
