Colton Frisbee and his dad had branched out from their family painting business into a successful cigar venture nearly five years ago.

Still, the 23-year-old new father and co-owner of Frisbee Painting Inc. kept that business going and, on Thursday (March 12), lost his life doing so.

Colton (left) and Corey Frisbee were business partners as well as father and son, co-owners of both a painting business and a cigar store. Colton, a husband and new father, died Thursday (March 12).

Colton Frisbee suffered a 25-foot fall and was pinned by a scissor lift, reports said. Details of the accident were not clear, and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration was investigating.

Lift Accident

Frisbee, of Weston, MO, was painting with a partner from a scissor lift at a truck parts plant in Kansas City, MO, reports said. The men were working about 25 feet up, near the top of the building

WDAF-TV reported that the lift and project scaffolding began to fall, prompting Frisbee to jump from the lift. He landed on a truck, and the lift fell on top of him, the station reported.

KMBC-TV, however, reported that the painters had been "using the scissor lift as a scaffold" when Frisbee fell out and the lift toppled over on top of him.

WDAF also said the other painter working from the lift had ridden it down and survived.

Father and Son

In an article last year, The Kansas City Star poignantly described the life of challenges that Frisbee and his father, Corey, 44, had overcome.

Investigators are still piecing together the accident that left the painter pinned by lift equipment.

Sole caregiver after a divorce, Corey Frisbee was committed to self-employment to be available to care for his son, the newspaper said.

After two businesses ran into challenges, the father and then-five-year-old took off on a months-long "camping trip" that the father admitted many years later had actually been a period of homelessness.

Later, Corey worked in construction for three years before starting the painting business, The Star reported.

After a nine-year run with their painting business, the cigar venture beckoned, the report said. While Colton held down the painting business, Corey learned to hand-roll cigars and developed Weston Tobacco, which opened in 2010.

The shop is a town favorite, with close ties to its customers and other merchants, reports said.

“He started with a little table and some tobacco leaves, and everybody said that he wouldn’t make it,” Terry Kast, another Weston business owner, told WDAF.

“I want to cry," she added. "I mean, I don’t really know what we can do other than try to see what we can do to help Corey go forward and help the family."
