A comical case of “telephone"-style miscommunication among neighbors drives the winning entry in PaintCare’s video contest to raise awareness about paint recycling.

That’s right. “Throwing out old paints” could sound like “blowing out your pants” to some.

The nation’s leading paint recycling organization awarded NANOShorts Entertainment a $10,000 grand prize for the video, according to an announcement Friday (March 6).

"When we got the news that we won, WE JUST BLEW OUT OUR PANTS,” said Tyler Schnabel, executive director and lead actor (emphasis in the original).

“It feels incredibly rewarding to lend our humor to the important topic that is impacting our communities. We are proud that our video is now a tool in PaintCare’s toolbox […]”

And the Winner is…

The contest, launched Feb. 16, allowed voters to watch three YouTube comedy sketch group videos and vote on their favorite via PaintCare’s Facebook page.

The “humorous and farcical approach” to the topic of paint recycling resonated well with audiences, giving NANOShorts a strong advantage for first place with over 4,000 votes, according to PaintCare officials.

“Throwing out old paints” could sound like “blowing out your pants” to some.

The runners up, SlapTv and Recycled Babies, got 1,359 and 1,330 votes, respectively.

The Winning Plot

In the winning video, a classic game of Telephone plays out. Schnabel plays an unsuspecting young man named Rick, who is walking his garbage to the curb. The trash includes a box of old paint cans.

As Rick nears the curb, neighbor Ned notices and asks if Rick is doing a little “spring cleaning.”

Rick replies that he is “throwing out some old paints.”

Ned mishears “paints” for “plants” and yells to another neighbor, who mishears “plants” for “pants,” before passing on the message to yet another neighbor. Ultimately, that neighbor hears that Rick “has blown out his pants.”

Once the confusion and miscommunication are clarified, the whole neighborhood chants at Rick that he should recycle the paint.

PaintCare hopes that the eco-friendly message to recycle paint gets passed on without miscommunication.

The organization sets up and manages paint recycling programs on behalf of paint manufacturers in six states. Two more states will begin programs this year.
