D+D 2015 is Durability + Design Magazine's second annual conference geared toward architects, specifiers, contractors, facility owners and other building technology professionals.

The marquee speaker has spent decades focusing on how to improve buildings, building products and the codes and standards that govern them.

His hour-long presentation, to be held at 8:30 a.m. June 9, is one of the many highlights of this year’s interactive conference program geared toward architects, specifiers, contractors, facility owners and other building technology professionals.

An authority on building science and technology, keynoter Chris Mathis will present “Why Buildings Matter and the Role of Durability in Sustainability.”

All-new roundtable discussions, hands-on workshops and a mock trial are slated for the conference.

At the Table

D+D 2015 will feature two afternoon Roundtable Discussions sponsored by the American Institute of Architects’ Miami chapter.

On June 8, Laverne Dalgleish, the executive director of the Air Barrier Association of America, will lead “Achieving and Managing Airtightness in Buildings.”

On June 9, the discussion turns to “Contribution of Coatings to Green Building—Myth or Reality,” moderated by the noted science writer, Dr. Cynthia Challener.

A panel of experts will contribute to the conversations.

Workshop Lineup

Three two-hour technical education workshops are planned for June 8.

Trimber and Berchenko

On June 8, Joe Berchenko (left), of ARCOM, will host a specification workshop; Ken Trimber (right), of KTA-Tator Inc., will instruct an inspection workshop.

Participants will learn basics in specifying coatings, quality assurance during paint installation, and designing coating systems for building assemblies.

The workshops and their instructors are:

  • "Quality Assurance During Paint Installation," led by Ken Trimber, KTA-Tator Inc.;
  • "Building Science, WUFI and Coatings," led by Kevin Knight, Retrospecs Consultants and Kevin Brown, KTA-Tator Inc.; and
  • "Design and Specification of Coating Systems for New Construction," led by Joe Berchenko, ARCOM and Rick Watson, Sherwin-Williams.

Attendees Act as Jury

The conference program will also include a Mock Trial on the afternoon of June 10.

Sponsored by FCA International, the trial will be led by Trimber, who chairs the SSPC Group Committee on Commercial Coatings.

The case will involve a major coating failure of an overcoat system applied to the exterior of a CMU building. Trial participants will represent the owner, contractor, specifier and coating supplier on the job.

The audience will act as the jury and assign responsibility for the failure.

Early-Bird Rates

Full registration includes admission to the exhibit hall, keynote session, educational program sessions for all three days.
