Consolidating the strength of one of the world's booming paint markets, Latin American manufacturers have joined forces in a new federation.

the Federación Latinoamericana de Fabricantes de Pinturas, or Latin American Federation of Paint Manufacturers, has formally launched with a headquarters in Mexico, and officers in Brazil and Argentina. - See more at: http://www.coatingsworld.com/issues/2014-11-01/view_latin-america-reports/new-latin-american-paint-federation-formed/#sthash.3hAwIbvd.dpuf

The Federación Latinoamericana de Fabricantes de Pinturas (Latin American Federation of Paint Manufacturers) held its first official meeting Jan. 24 in Mexico City. The federation unites manufacturers and related companies from Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Colombia, Uruguay and Ecuador.

The federation uses the nickname LatinPin.

Officers Elected

The Mexico City meeting formalized decisions made at previous meetings, approved new by-laws, and ratified the choice of officers, the new federation announced.

The new leaders are:

  • President: Javier Maldonado of the Mexican Paint and Printing Ink Manufacturers Association, known by its Spanish-language abbreviation of ANAFAPYT;
  • Vice President: Dilson Ferreira, of the Brazilian coating makers association known as ABRAFATI; and
  • Vice President: Ignacio Bersztein, of the Argentinian coating makers association known as ATIPAT.

The group says its goals are to share technical knowledge and pursue joint initiatives regionally, while strengthening the regional market's clout on the global stage.

$9.2B Market

The Latin American region, with a population of 604,000,000, has a $9.2 billion coatings market, according to a Sherwin-Williams investor presentation last year that cited figures from the International Monetary Fund.

The presentation, by Sherwin-Williams' Latin America Coatings Group, says that Sherwin's Latin America Coatings Group is the market leader for protective and marine coatings in Brazil, Mexico and Chile and first in architectural coatings in Ecuador.

Several reports estimate the Latin American coatings market at $9.2 billion and growing.

However, the presentation predates PPG Industries' $2.3 billion acquisition of Consorcio Comex, S.A. de C.V. That deal closed in November, bringing the Mexico-based paint and coatings giant into the fold of the world's largest coatings company.

In 2013, market researcher IHS pegged the Latin American coatings market at an eight percent annual growth rate through 2018, compared with rates of just two to three percent in the U.S. and 1.5 to 2.5 percent in Western Europe.

The same year, Coatings World reported that 11 percent of all of AkzoNobel's 2012 revenues came from Latin America and quoted the company as calling the region of “nearly equal importance to North America for the company’s operations.” The region made up nine percent of Sherwin-Williams global sales, 13 percent of RPM’s, and 14 percent of DuPont’s, the magazine reported.

Trainees work at Sherwin-Williams' Academia del Pinto (Painter Academy) in Latin America. The new federation is aiming to increase the region's clout on the global stage.

The Latin American Coatings Show, set this year for July 15-16 in Mexico City, is the region's largest show for coatings raw materials suppliers and equipment manufacturers.

AkzoNobel, for example, reports that 11 percent of all revenues in 2012 came from Latin America, which now is of “nearly equal importance to North America for the company’s operations.” Similarly, Latin America is estimated to represent nine percent of Sherwin-Williams $9.5 billion global sales, 13 percent of RPM’s global coatings sales of $4 billion, and 14 percent of DuPont’s global paint and coatings sales of $5.3 billion. - See more at: http://www.coatingsworld.com/issues/0613/view_latin-america-reports/latin-american-paint-and-coatings-market-rebounds/#sthash.JVTl0um5.dpuf

Building Consensus

ABRAFATI said that it was a primary driver behind the new federation.

“The idea of the Latin American federation has been maturing for a while now, having been discussed on different occasions with leaderships in the other countries," said Ferreira.

"At ABRAFATI 2013, the attendance of representative of several associations enabled the holding of a meeting where a consensus was reached about our need to have a common representation forum. That was when the process began which resulted in its creation."
