AkzoNobel is spreading its reach even further in China by investing €50 million ($83.2 million USD) in a new decorative coatings facility.

The Amsterdam-based global paints and coatings company announced Wednesday (Aug. 20) that it broke ground on its fourth plant for decorative paints in China.

The new site, located in Qionglai Yang’an Industrial Park in Chengdu, will occupy 55,000 square meters of space. The first phase is scheduled to open in 2016, with full operations by 2017.

AkzoNobel broke ground on its fourth plant in China. Its Ningbo plant, pictured here, opened in November.

The facility is part of an investment to build manufacturing facilities for both powder coatings and decorative paints.

'Ongoing Commitment'

"Our investment in this new site is further proof of our ongoing commitment to China, which is one of our most strategically important markets,” said AkzoNobel CEO Ton Büchner in the company’s announcement.

“Establishing this new facility also gives added momentum to our organic growth ambitions, as well as enabling us to continue expanding our manufacturing footprint in Asia."

Within Sichuan province, the company currently operates a regional office, powder coatings production site and a car refinishes training center.

The new site will add about 100 jobs to the local market. AkzoNobel employs more than 7,400 people in China, with 500 of those in research and development.

Other China Additions

In addition to building the new plant, the company is also donating ¥1.5 million ($244,300 USD) to help fund the creation of 10 "Adream Centers" in Qionglai.

AkzoNobel's Human Cities initiative aims to "improve, energize and regenerate urban communities around the world." The company provided coatings for the Cooled Conservatories at Gardens by the Bay in Singapore, which was part of its Asian Case Study for the initiative.

The centers are designed to improve the quality of education for children—one of the key focus areas of AkzoNobel’s Human Cities initiative, which was launched in June and aims to "improve, energize and regenerate urban communities around the world."

"We attach great importance to being part of the communities where we operate," said LIN Liangqi, president of AkzoNobel China and managing director of the Decorative Paints business in China and North Asia.

"Contributing to the education of young people in the area will therefore be just as important as enhancing our production capacity with the new site and providing more value for our customers in China," Liangqi said.
