Cladding Panels Meet Fire Standard

A new, ultra-lightweight cladding panel system combines fire safety with the design versatility of fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP), the manufacturer says.

Kreysler & Associates bills its Fireshield 285 system as the first fire-resistant FRP cladding panel to pass the stringent NFPA 285 test. The test involves construction of a full-scale mockup of a multistory façade system, which is then burned and tested for fire propagation characteristics.

Applications and Features

The Fireshield 285 system allows designers to create large and high-rise facades of almost any shape, contour and texture that meet fire safety requirements under the International Building Code (IBC), the company says.

The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art expansion includes 700 Fireshield 285 cladding panels of various sizes.

Company president William Kreysler says the product is made from "a proprietary blend of synthetic resins and natural aggregate." The company calls the product "extremely durable, environmentally efficient and highly fire-resistant."

Using digital fabrication techniques, the company says it can create cladding shapes "that have never existed outside a computer model."

Panels can also be merged to create large, seamless facades, it says.

San Francisco MoMA Project

The system will be used on the forthcoming San Francisco Museum of Modern Art expansion, as a 10-story wall clad in a series of white curved surfaces designed to evoke the waters of the San Francisco Bay.

The 700 panels have a skin thickness of 3/16 of an inch. The panels range in size up to 5.5 by 30 feet and weigh an average of five pounds per square foot.

Kreysler & Associates is a custom fabrication shop specializing in the design, engineering, and manufacture of composite products for architecture, sculpture, and industrial applications.
