From stadiums to skyscrapers, building blitzes are heating up the global coatings market in China and Brazil.

Booming urbanization in China and global games in Brazil will keep demand hot in those regions, as coatings are widely employed to increase energy efficiency and improve air quality, new market reports forecast.

China’s architectural coatings market nearly doubled to 4.64 million tons between 2008 and 2013—a pace likely to continue, especially in the area of functional coatings, according to a new report by Lux Research, based in Boston, MA.

With seating for more than 73,000, Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro is just one of a dozen stadiums being readied for World Cup 2014 in Brazil. The venues are lapping up a lot of coatings.

Brazil, meanwhile, will continue to lead the fast-growing South American coatings market as the country prepares to host the World Cup this month and the Olympic Games in 2016.

Those events "have stimulated demand for all types of paints and coatings," reports UK-based research concern IRL.

China: Functional Focus

In China, three major types of architectural functional coatings—insulating, solar reflective, and photocatalytic— will be the most lucrative segments in the near term, due to their feasibility in all building types and early commercialization status.

More important, these coatings "have high growth potential because their adoption is aligned with the policies of the Chinese government to improve building sustainability and efficiency,” said Jerrold Wang, Lux Research Associate and the lead author of "Exploring Chinese Architectural Functional Coating Market: Identifying High-Growth Provinces.

Patents, Suppliers and Climate

The report identifies drivers and opportunities in high-growth provinces. Among the highlights:

  • Patent Surge. Patent activity in all three types of architectural functional coatings has risen since 2010, with 472 patents awarded in the four years up to January 2014. Most have been secured by commercial enterprises, indicating market readiness and responsiveness to government policy.
  • Standout Companies. Of the 18 companies and research institutes evaluated, Beijing-based Zhishengweihua and Haitai emerged as the top candidates for partnerships, according to the report. Lux cited "technical advantages" by each company's products: "low thermal conductivity of Zhishengweihua’s insulation coating and the fine particle size of Haitai’s photocatalytic coating powder." No additional information on the companies could be found Monday (June 2).
  • Climate Clout. Insulating coatings are highly valued in China’s northern region because of its harsh winters and high electricity tariffs. Solar-reflective coatings have a ready market in the Pearl River Delta, and the middle and lower branches of the Yangtze River because of high cooling demand.

Beijing-based Zhishengweihua is expected to be a major coatings player in China, thanks to its favorable position with the government, Lux Research reports.

Photocatalytic coatings "should focus on regions with serious air pollution and high air-quality improvement targets,” Wang added.

South American Surge

Ten countries across South America are also in for a robust few years, according to IRL's "A Profile of the South American Paint Industry."

The total market for paints and coatings in South America exceeded 2.9 million tonnes in 2013, and is forecast to rise to more than 3.8 million tonnes by 2018—a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 5.6 percent, according to IRL.

Architectural and decorative coatings for consumer and professional uses account for about three-quarters of the South American market, although this proportion varies from country to country.

Brazil dominates the South American market, but tiny Bolivia is growing rapidly.

Growth is expected to be highest in the architectural and general industrial segments. This is influenced by growth in the dominant market of Brazil, where significant investment in infrastructure is currently taking place.

Brazil Boom

Brazil is by far the largest market, accounting for nearly 60 percent of total demand in the region; Bolivia, Paraguay and Uruguay are very small by comparison. Brazil has already spent more than $11 billion on the World Cup preparations—triple the outlay of 2010 host South Africa.

Nevertheless, all countries are predicted to enjoy good growth rates over the forecast period, especially the developing market of Bolivia.

Architectural coatings lead the Brazilian market, but protective and marine coatings are getting a push from the booming oil and gas sector.

Growth in the marine and protective coatings segment is being boosted by developments in the oil and gas sector, particularly in Brazil, where there is currently extensive activity in the area of deep water oil reserves.

Segment-level reports are available for protective and marine coatings, general industrial and plastic coatings, automotive refinishes and OEM, architectural and powder coatings.
