A São Paulo school mural skewering the billions of dollars lavished on World Cup preparations in Brazil has gone viral ahead of the games, which open June 12.

The elementary-school mural depicts a weepy, young child sitting down to a meal—a plate holding only a large soccer ball.

Brazilian street artist Paulo Ito posted an image of his creation to Facebook earlier this month and, as of Tuesday (May 27), it had been shared more than 96,000 times, according to the Los Angeles Times. The artwork has also been covered by a multitude of news bureaus around the globe.

The mural sends a message about the billions of dollars Brazil has spent to host the month-long tournament.

The 36-year-old artist told the L.A. Times that the mural had gone viral because it “brought together what a lot of people are thinking.”

The country has spent $11 billion on the World Cup—about triple the cost of the South Africa World Cup in 2010, reports say. The Associated Press reports that the price of building or restoring the tournament's 12 arenas has nearly quadrupled initial estimates.

Construction of the event venues has also claimed eight lives.

Thousands have been protesting the public money spent on the event amid shortages of quality education, housing and health care. However, few have mentioned a shortage of food, the L.A. Times notes.
